Sports Day - just for kids or the perfect team builder?
Sports Day: The phrase brings to mind a very specific school experience for everyone. It might conjure up happy memories of sporting success, shining medals and headteachers’ handshakes, or a sweat-inducing sense of dread as you recall dropping the baton during the all-important relay race or being picked last for the netball team. Whether your school Sports Days were positive or negative, you definitely remember them!
So, it might not be the most obvious choice for a team-building event for your company. Surely Sports Day is consigned to the past once you’ve left the confines of school? What would a grown-up Sports Day even entail?
Here’s the answer!
The TAG team arrive early to set up the team bases, which are gazebos with a table for each participating team. An arena style track is laid out, with the team gazebos down each side. By half an hour prior to your arrival, everything is ready to go - so you can jump right in when you get here.
After a meet and greet, we usually start with an ice breaker activity, dividing your group into teams. You can preselect these or we’ll randomly select for you on the day - it’s up to you.
The host will run through the format and objectives of the activity, and once you’re all up-to-speed, the games will begin!
We organise a series of different races – most are run as relays with four, six or eight team members taking part. All the activities are built with fun in mind (no overzealous PE teachers here!) and include a hockey slalom, a classic egg and spoon race, a skipping race, an obstacle race, a four-person ski race, a costume race, javelin (who can throw a woggle the furthest!), a duck race (where you’ll balance a rubber duck on your head) and a grand Donkey Derby finale (where you’ll compete on space hoppers with a donkey costume over the top!).
Some ‘bonus rounds’ are also added in - think keepy-ups, or Hula Hoop challenges.
There are many benefits to taking part in competitive activities, which include improving teamwork and collaborative skills, developing mental resilience and building intrinsic motivation, so while all the events are designed for entertainment (it’s hard not to laugh with a rubber duck on your head), there’ll be points for all competitions up for grabs too. At the end of the day, a winner is announced and TAG medals are awarded.
Maybe you’ll be reliving past Sports Day glories - or maybe you’ll be creating new ones. Either way, contact us to organise a Sports Day for your organisation - it’s the ideal team builder and we guarantee you’ll come away with positive memories after a day of lighthearted, sporty fun!
